All About Junks
The Traditional Junk Style Boat
Sri Su Pai 1 design is the classic Asian Junk or brig. It is distinguished by it’s sails and the ship’s stern and bow overhanging the hull.
The sails are fully battened (horizontal wooden slats across the sail) and are typically made of woven matting or cloth. This design makes the sails very strong, easily reefed (reduced in size), and allows them to hold an efficient aerodynamic shape. Sailors can adjust the sail’s curvature for optimal performance from the deck.
Junks often feature a large, heavy rudder that can be raised and lowered through a well in the stern. This allows for operation in both deep water and shallow shoals, providing excellent directional control and acting as a daggerboard to reduce leeway (sideways drift).
These types of boats were used on the old maritime trade routes of Thailand which supplied chinaware sold to Malaya, The Philippines, Indonesia across the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka.
The stern is typically broad, flat, and often slightly upturned. This design provides ample space on deck at the rear of the boat and contributes to stability. The large rudder is mounted on the centerline of this transom.
Unlike Western boats built on a keel and frame, traditional junks were often built using a “shell-first” method. The hull planking was fitted edge-to-edge (carvel) and shaped first, with bulkheads added later for internal strength. The hull is relatively flat-bottomed with a full, box-like shape forward, providing enormous cargo capacity and good stability in coastal waters.
Instead of a deep, fixed keel for stability, junks rely on their wide, flat hull form and sometimes the use of leeboards or their deep, retractable rudder to prevent sideways slip. This allows them to sail in very shallow waters and even sit upright on a mudflat when the tide goes out.
The hull interior is divided into several compartments by solid transverse bulkheads. This is a brilliant safety feature that limits flooding if the hull is breached, a concept adopted much later in modern shipbuilding. These compartments also often served as separate cargo holds or living spaces.
Many junks, like Sri Su Pai 1, feature painted eyes on the bow. This is a traditional motif believed to help the boat “see” its way and ward off evil spirits during the journey.

She is also fully equipped for a day at sea with a food preparation area, a bar serving refreshing drinks, a music amplifier system so you can select your musical soundtrack and a western toilet with fresh water shower.
